Minkee Eye Mask Pattern

OH how I love an eye mask.  I sleep with one every night and I know it makes me seem high maintenance, and maybe I am, but whatever.  I need it to sleep. I love sleeping.  I do what my eyes tell me I must do.

We shared a DIY for a Sleep Mask a while ago, but this time we are also giving you a free downloadable pattern.  I love the addition of minkee fabric – it’s so cozy AND light-resistant.  I also love finding some cute elastic and putting it to good use here. If you want to be fun, shrink the pattern down to 75% and make a matching one for your kid. The whole thing takes like fifteen minutes. You might as well.  And remember leave a comment on this or any post this week and you could win that insanely cute octopus up there on the left.

Minkee Eye Mask
You’ll need just a small scrap-size piece of fabric, another piece of minkee (or you can use something else that’s cozy) and a piece of decorative elastic.  I cut my elastic 14″ but I have a big ole head, you might need yours a little shorter.  Just hold it up to your head and measure, making sure it’s not too tight.  For the fabric – go with something black or really dark.  I used Alexander Henry Good Earth Poppies but I think any of these would also be awesome: Fulham Road Regent Peacock Trios in Black, Daiwabo Japan Kanon Small Flowers in Black, Keiki Wee Woodland in Woodland Black, or Kokka Trefle Cotton Medium Matroyshka Dolls in Black.

1.  Download our pattern for the Minkee Eye Mask.  You can check it out below, and click here for the free PDF pattern.

2.  Cut the pattern out and trace it on to your fabric.  Cut one cotton (remember: use a darker colored fabric to keep more light out) and one minkee:

3.  Lay your minkee right side up.  Using the marks on our pattern, pin each side of your elastic in place:

Sew them on with a nice strong zig zag:

4.  Now lay your cotton right side down on top, so right sides are facing.  Pin in place all the way around the edges, making sure not to pin your elastic into your seams:

Sew in place all the way around with a 1/4″ seam allowance, leaving a hole for turning and back stitching at the beginning and end:

If you need to, trim your edges (except don’t trim at the hole).  Reach in the hole and grab the elastic and pull it out:

Continue to pull until your eye mask has turned right side out.  Iron it nice and flat, folding the edges under at the hole:

5.  Top stitch all the way around right at the edge (this will close the hole – you could slip stitch it by hand and skip the top stitching if you really want, but top stitching will keep the layers from slipping).  If your fabrics are two different colors remember to use different colored thread on the spool and in the bobbin (for example I used black on the spool and brown in the bobbin) so you are nicely coordinated.  This is very important, to be coordinated while sleeping, right?

Here is the view from the other side:

Girl, you are so done. Isn’t my skin so smooth and porcelain?  No, that’s a lamp.  I don’t allow photographs while sleeping.

This is why.

HA! Anyhoo… The Season of Cozy is upon us.

So, think you will try it?  I think this could be a great new-mom present at a baby shower, no?  I gave eye masks to all of my wedding girls. I don’t know if they use them but I thought it was pretty cool.

I too LOVE the eye mask. My hubby calls it my eye patch…so I guess i look more piratey than high maintenance…) But I get really panicky if I can't find it! Like maybe it fell behind the bed…or Charlotte toted it off and put it on elmo – I'm thinking I definitely need to make several so I don't experience anxiety attacks as I'm getting ready for bed.

Haha that makes me want to sleep right now! Looks so comfy though!

Oh and don't worry, you look way better waking up than I do! My husband says I am always giving him dirty looks when I wake up. I keep telling him that's just my wake up face!!

Ooo, I love little sleep masks. I take my masks to the next level of diva-ness and sandwich a piece of room darkening curtain backing in it. You can buy it in the deco fabric section of the fabric store and it has a soft fabric feel. Mmmmm, so much sleepy darkness.

What a great idea for minkee scraps! Bonus that they're small so the minkee doesn't have much opportunity to get super wonky. Love your comforter.

I need this so bad! I feel like I'm sleeping with one eye open anticipating the cries of my teething baby, which result in waking up every morning to eyes of death staring back at me in the mirror. The ghastly dark circles of motherhood painted on my worn out eyes. I really need to make this.

WONDERFUL! In a few weeks I'm heading off for a 5 day retreat with 6 girlfriends. I'm going to make one for each of them as a surprise to leave on their pillows the first night. Thanks!

I so need to sew one for my Hubby. I like to stay up late and read or embroider and he claims the light bothers him 😉

Well great. I wish you would have posted this sooner so I wouldn't have invested all that money into room darkening shades. Which didn't really work, btw, since there is no door into our bathroom that has a window in the ceiling (forgot what those are called).
P.S. Just read your disclaimer at the bottom. It's so true about do-it-yourself activities involving risk, I have the hot glue gun burns to prove it.

Living in the tropics means the sun is up REALLY early! I wear an old eyemask – a freebie from an airplane flight once. I overheard my husband telling my stepson that 'it's like waking up next to Zorro each morning!' but I still love it! Anything for another 20 minutes!

The sun is always sneaking through my shades and this will be perfect! It's also a neat project for the young divas in my HS class. 😉

I made two – one for me, one for my 8yo daughter. We slept over at the Museum of Natural History, and the eye masks plus earplugs really helped us get some sleep. They are on the packing list for any future trips we make!

This is great! I made a nightshirt for my mom for Mother’s Day and I wanted to make something to go with it – an eye mask will be perfect. I’ll use the same fabric on top that the nightshirt is made from – lycra satin fabric. It should be yummy! Thanks for sharing.

has anyone else had problems downloading the pdf pattern? it only prints less than half of the pattern and what it prints is much larger than the size on the instructions. is there a finished size listed anywhere? need to make one for a young girl so she will need it smaller than an adult one. is there any other site that provides an actual proper size pattern, I have only checked out this site so far.

You may need to go into your print settings and select to print at 70%, thats my estimate for a good size for a kids eye mask.

What is the size from left to right of the pattern? Mine came out huge! Mine print out at 12-1/2″! It wraps clear around to my ears!!!! Didn’t take long to make but it is just huge!
